Wow, all in OC! Laguna beach even! Amazing.
In the 1960s, Smith was a member of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, a group of hippies who lived in shacks, tents and caves in Laguna Canyon, dropping acid and smoking weed. The group, which was associated with psychedelic guru Timothy Leary, evolved into an international hashish- and LSD-distribution network that was eventually brought down by authorities.
The group smuggled hashish in from Afghanistan and Pakistan, and produced high-grade LSD nicknamed "Orange Sunshine."
The Brotherhood of Eternal Love was nicknamed the Hippie Mafia in a 1972 article in Rolling Stone.

Peter P. Marra, a research scientist at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center at the National Zoo, pointed out that cats were the only domesticated animal permitted to roam. “Pigs have to stay in pens, chickens have to stay in pens,” he said. “Why are cats allowed to run around and do what their instincts tell them to do, which is rampage?”
No, they control rodents ie save your sorry ass.
It isn’t fair to the cat. Regular stints outdoors are estimated to knock three or more years off a pet cat’s life. “No parent would let a toddler outside the house to run free in traffic,” said Darin Schroeder, vice president for conservation advocacy at the American Bird Conservancy in Washington. “A responsible owner shouldn’t do it with a pet.”
Idiots. No parent would trap their kid inside all day.

says that a body stifles grenades so a body bomb isn't useful.
But a grenade acts largely via shrapnel which is stopped by a torso; but a body bomb acts via blast wave, especially on pressurized airplanes at 35kft. Since 250gm of unconfined
brisant explosive can down such a plane, 500gm (a pound) is
hazardous.
With a surgeon or a female more than a pound could be emplaced.
One has to wonder about the triggering system; some reports claim a text message might have been involved. Phones
are awfully tiny now! Interesting unexpected consequence
that they enable buttbombs.
The third tactical shift is perhaps the most interesting, and that is the use of an IED hidden in the anal cavity of the bomber. Suicide bombers have long been creative when it comes to hiding their devices. In addition to the above-mentioned IED in the camera gear used in the Masood assassination, female suicide bombers with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have hidden IEDs inside brassieres, and female suicide bombers with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party have worn IEDs designed to make them look pregnant. However, this is the first instance we are aware of where a suicide bomber has hidden an IED inside a body cavity.

Infection came from Afghanistan tick bite
By Justin Schuver (Contact) | Andalusia Star-News
Published Thursday, September 17, 2009
A U.S. Army soldier from Covington County died Wednesday in Landstuhl, Germany, after succumbing to a virus he contracted after being bitten by a tick while serving in Afghanistan.
Sgt. E-5 Robert David Gordon II, 22, of River Falls, was stationed close to Afghanistan’s capital of Kabul when the tick bit him, said his aunt, Faye Dean of Andalusia.
“As far as we know, he was bitten by a tick that carried a virus,” said Dean, who has been in contact with Gordon’s family in Germany. “It put him into a coma for five days and they had him on a dialysis machine. He had a heart attack and passed away Wednesday morning (approximately 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night, Alabama time).”
Dean said doctors determined Gordon contracted the rare Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus, which has been recorded in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. According to the World Health Organization’s Web site, the mortality rate for the CCHF virus is 30 percent.

MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - An unmanned U.S. reconnaissance drone crashed in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul early on Saturday, hitting the offices of one of Iraq's biggest political parties, the U.S. military said.
No injuries were reported, and there was no indication the aircraft was shot down, said Major Derrick Cheng, a military spokesman in northern Iraq.
Cheng said it was a coincidence that the drone struck the local offices of the Iraqi Islamic Party, Iraq's biggest Sunni Arab political group, the military said.
The U.S. military frequently deploys drones in Iraq as part of measures to counter roadside bombs. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Hello, I'm a recent 215 patient, and found your publication
at a local dispensary. You solicited contributions.
I wonder if I have anything to contribute.
I would use a pseudonym.
Background.. nerd... drug nerd... high achieving chronic.
Lets see... I've got a Master's degree in computer science from UC,
and undergrad degrees in CS from MIT and also Cognitive Science from
MIT. My kid was the best speller in his grade last year. I raised a cat for 18 years. I live in Irvine. My wife is a psychiatrist from a country where ganja is widely used (although she doesn't approve, although its clear that
I'm a better person at home when I smoke). I'm currently employed writing software for a medical instrument. (The best part is working with smart people, but also not killing babies; instead I'm building useful tools
that help people.)
I've been smoking since I was 18. I'm wake and bake if I have it.
Before that I was a *very* uptight bookworm.
More and more over time, "I have it". And its helped so much.
Anyway,
I might have amusing anecdotes for your pub. E.g.:
My 9 year old recently saw my
jar o' buds, and thought they were owl pellets. I've grown in
a closet at UC. And frat at MIT. I've come up with patents while smoking hash.
I saw a block of hash with Kabul in gold lettering in the 80s,
back when the Afghan invaders spoke russian, not english. I was
on the Internet in '87; I wrote a FAQ about acid years before
my parents and everyone else got online :-)
I've read Szasz and the WHO report
on cannabis; I've met Herrer when he visited KUCI. I've had a friend with
MS (a PhD biologist) who used a vaporizer; he sold during his undergrad years to put himself through college. I've known a very white ambulance driver rastafarian.
Once I sent my folks some seeds (I was raised rural so this is not
too weird), there was a grass seed in there, my lawyer dad grew a frickin' sequoia sativa. Then composted it, after confirming it with me.
:-(
I've met parents of freelance cannabis vendors (aka "dealers") and taken my
kid to visit some. They have all been friends introduced by friends. Recently my vendor friend had some logistical difficulties, so I went 215 legit.
(Its not so easy to obtain meds freelance when you're a middle aged introvert.) It also saves me a drive up to LA.
I was amazed when I checked an online weedmap; there is a dispensary that I pass every day to work, near the airport. My physician was just outside of Irvine. Holy cow. I heart OC.
Needless to say, I've visited the local store a few times. "Buy local"
Leave work to pick up the kid, drop by the dispensary on the way.
Twenty first frickin' century.
Only one delivery-only dispensary honored my 10 year old (yes, 1999) recommendation that I had gotten years ago, but never used. Most dispensaries didn't. But the modern recommendation is welcomed. I don't really fear being rounded up from a List, although I'm generally suspicious of government, bigtime. (I've been an Objectivist too.)
It is so cool, and surreal, to be able to shop for grass on the Internet.
Welcome to the 21st century.
Your mag was extremely well produced --albeit a bit hard to read,
a little like Wired, with high contrast graphics hurting reading,
and fascinating. Of course I like the satirical riff on OC Weekly which actually has a fine 'Alternative Healing' section and occasionally great reporting, as you certainly know. Fun pulp. Anyway write back if you
think anything is worth developing. My major theme is that you don't
have to be a low-achieving slackmonster just because you smoke,
any more than you have to listen to Sinatra if you drink martinis.
(Not that slacking, sinatra, or martinis, or any combination thereof, are bad. But the association is *not* obligatory. I fucking read technical magazines stoned. And do everything else at some stne level. Some stoners can't
stand reggae or rammstein. To each their own.)
I smoke with a straight tobac pipe (Dr Grabow). If the stem is lost I use
1/8" polyethylene tubing from Home Depot as a stem; this is similar
to old revolutionary-era pub pipes, which were ceramic. I've made
pipes and bongs from hardware store supplies. If you can't make a
smoking device you shouldn't be smoking. In college we had an airpipe
made from a section of pole-vaulting pole, and once a nitrous-charged
multibong/hookah. I once had to make a pipe from an acorn and a reed
because we had forgotton ours. Engineers must get stoned. I've also
made some nice pipes out of soft flint glass tubes bent over the
gas stove.
I've always been self-exploratory. When I was maybe 10 I put the juice from poison ivy on a square inch of forearm and documented what happened every
hour. Psychopharm experiments followed when I grew older and interested in the mind. I don't consume anything except for beer, tobac, coffee, and
grass now. I favor relaxants over stims now, although my only relaxants
are ethanol and grass, nothing more dangerous. I very much enjoy the
fluency of thought that grass brings, and the disinhibition that EtOH
brings. (Yes, I know the latter is dangerous, leads to dangerous behavior, etc. I never drive after drinking; I know how to drive if I've smoked.
FWIW I am the most polite driver ever if I've smoked as agression (yes,
go in front of me) and overconfidence (no I won't race the yellow) are muted.)
I wonder if brick & mortar dispensaries can compete with delivery-only
enterprises. I loathe "business" but I have to wonder about this ---overhead
of a physical location. I'm also
interested in how "420 culture" is the new speakeasy, and how speakeasies
developed during the 20s or 30s.
Anyway I enjoyed your pub and even if I'm just a source of topics,
or amusement in your press room, I wish you well. I'll riff on anything
from botany to morality to pharmacology to flying with cannabis with various degrees of expertise.
I can also write about not feeling guilty if you need meds, of whatever
form.
(Between you and me, I take fluoxetine also. Recognizing depression
and taking meds was a big step, many 215'ers may need to make the same
step. Fluox for me by itself was not enough, but with the Plant I'm much better. Its doesn't help with social anxiety like cannabis does for me.
(For some, its makes it worse.)
Its not a personality weakness to have a use for pharms any more than diabetes is a personality weakness.)

So Mr. Mays partook of cocaine, according to the chemistry. It may have directly induced his death, which would be poor pharmacology (think
John Belushi..), or it might have been a dumb or risky hobby, given heart defects He was born with (think Jim Fixx). Or He might have partaken in moderation with little risk, and his built-in defects finally failed. I dunno, I'm not his physician/pharmacist/psychiatrist/shaman. Choosing your parents well is an important skill.
But you might be disappointed in Him, I hear. Why?
Is it because he did something currently illegal in the US?
Is it because it was likely a hedonistic, pure pleasure use of a powerful tool?
IE Rather than therapeutic (topical anesthetic; or freudian-psychological; or hoped-for moodlift)?
Is it because he chose to make the trade-off of pleasure for physical
(or emotional or addictive) risk which is implicit in any non-food
intake? (You can die from sex, too)
Is it because of the black market trade associations which arise naturally where something is illicit? (Prohibition anyone? Mental health issues?
Violence from lack of State enforceability of contracts? )
Is it because you fear that His energy, creativity, etc, which you
rightly admired, were due to plant extracts? (Chemicals can't create creativity. Given how manic he likely was when working, he is likely to have
been obnoxiously effusive if stimulated pharmacologically :-)
Is it because of perceived hypocracy, where in public life the message was
not to partake? (There was no such hypocracy IMHO. Compare to many
politicians' outcomes.)
....
So,
Is it fundamentally immoral to do something currently illegal
in your current locale? Is it fundamentally immoral to do *anything* hedonistic? Is it fundamentally *weak* to pursue such avocations?
Should we be ascetics, neither enjoying food nor music nor anything
else not related to sustenance and work?
Is it ok to drink coffee? Take if it is or was legal? Watch cartoons instead of solving The Great Problems?
Play videogames instead of growing food for the poor 16/7?
What if coffee is illegal? (It has been) Beer is illegal in some countries today. Yo mama driving a car is a crime in some places, as is your
father lacking a beard, or driving to the store on certain days of the
week. They'll stone you for that.
What if teaching folks to read is illegal? Or marrying someone of
a different race? Or the law says to return slaves, and you're
on the jury? What if the supreme court says its ok to round up US nips and imprison them?
....
I don't contest anyone's right to judge another. I am merely suggesting
it might be interesting (personality resolving) to examine why a
feeling that arises does so. I'm playing moral inquisitor because
I get the idea from your father that its a game you're trained for.
Sparring is fun if you respect your partner.
....
PS: Disclaimer: I don't actually enthuse that much over Mays. I did once
buy a tub of oxy-clean and was impressed that someone on TV had a beard.
That is all.
....
PPS: There is a wee bit of irony in that stimulants make people want
to clean compulsively, and Mr. M. sold cleaners. I'm sure he'd have
sold mud to drillers & spas just as well.

"In a democracy, only the people can order its soldiers home," Harrach said in German in the first video.

Almost on cue this week came those in North America who agree with Obama – albeit they would never associate themselves with the Evil One, let alone dare question Israel's cheerleading for the Iraqi war. "I do not believe we can build a democratic state in Afghanistan," announces Dianne Feinstein, the California Democrat who chairs the senate intelligence committee. "I believe it will remain a tribal entity." And Nancy Pelosi, the House Speaker, does not believe "there is a great deal of support for sending more troops to Afghanistan".
Colin Kenny, chair of Canada's senate committee on national security and defence, said this week that "what we hoped to accomplish in Afghanistan has proved to be impossible. We are hurtling towards a Vietnam ending".

"They appoint shadow governors for most provinces, review their performance, and replace them periodically. They established a body to receive complaints against their own officials and to act on them. They install courts to deliver swift and enforced justice in contested and controlled areas. They levy taxes and conscript fighters and laborers. They claim to provide security against a corrupt government, criminality, and local power brokers. They also claim to protect American identity against foreign encroachment."
Could be talking about the US, but its McC whining about
Talibs, with some substitutions.
Emphesis mine.

ti's signing keys
These are the .key files necessary to sign your own TI-compatible operating systems or third-party Flash apps. I do not yet have information on how to do the signing itself for the 68k calculators. For z80 calculators, Benjamin Moody's RabbitSign (Unix, Windows) works well.
These keys are provided for the express purpose of creating software compatible with TI calculators, specifically the bootloader software permanently installed on such calculators. I state in good faith that I believe such action is permitted by United States law. Other uses may not be permitted. I do not support taking actions that are illegal, and I do not take responsibility for any misuse. This material is provided for lawful use only.
These are big-endian hexadecimal.
You can download a .zip file of all the keys here.

Why do the mil prosesmiths / propogandamills insist on "transfer case" instead of coffin?
An Army carry team carries a transfer case containing the remains of Capt. Joe Blow.
He died from an improvised explosive device while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Should read:
Pallbearers carry a coffin with what's left of Capt Blow after he drove over a mine in the Long Futile Crusade

Two U.S. military officials said that forces from the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command were involved in Monday's raid in southern Somalia. The officials gave no details about the target, and they spoke on condition of anonymity because the operation was secret.
But the deputy mayor for security affairs in Somalia's capital, citing intelligence reports, confirmed Nabhan was killed. Abdi Fitah Shawey did not elaborate.
Somali witnesses to Monday's raid say six helicopters buzzed an insurgent-held village near Barawe, some 155 miles (250 kilometers) south of Mogadishu, before two of the aircraft opened fire on a vehicle, killing two and wounding two.
US commandos / assasins in Somalia. How many undeclared wars are we fighting (for Israel)?
Its not like there are a lot of Somalis in the US... except,
there are.

Lose to freedom fighters defending their own country.

Unlike other so-called 'storm chasers', who are often labelled adrenaline junkies for their obsessive pursuit of extreme weather, Jim is driven by his love for art and his interaction with nature by documenting the unpredictable changes in weather and climate.

ACMD: Cannabis: Classification and Public Health (2008) (07/05/2008)
In July 2007 the Home Secretary requested, in the light of “real public concern about the potential mental health effects of cannabis use, in particular the use of stronger forms of the drug, commonly known as skunk”, that the Council re -assess the classification of cannabis. This report represents the Council’s response to the Home Secretary’s request.

Xeni, my favorite sexbot from the future, has a problem
with dispensaries in her neighborhood.
If dispensaries were not for profit they would
not exist for long; very little does.
The local (OC) dispensaries are very tight about
having proper paperwork. They are also discrete.
An interesting question is whether brick and
mortar dispensaries can compete with delivery
only, which has lower overhead.

He has offered a law to alter the First Amendment rights of Americans by
banning anti-war activists from putting the names of fallen soldiers on
T-shirts with messages such as "Bush lied" on the front and "They died" on the back; he observed that the dead soldiers fought to protect freedom, and "opportunists" should not be allowed to "exploit" the sacrifices with political messages opposing war.

Chalmers Johnson in The Sorrows of Empire:
"The only truly common elements in the totality of America's foreign bases are imperialism and militarism--an impulse on the part of our elites to dominate other peoples largely because we have the power to do so, followed by the strategic reasoning that, in order to defend these newly acquired outposts and control the regions they are in, we must expand the areas under our control with still more bases. To maintain its empire, the Pentagon must constantly invent new reasons for keeping in our hands as many bases as possible long after the wars and crises that led to their creation have evaporated."
By James Madison, primary author of the Constitution:
"Of all enemies to public liberty, war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded, because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debt and taxes; and armies, and debts, and taxes are the known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few."

Mind you, we are all immies. I'm 5th generation on one side, 1880s from eastern europe. And my ancestors would have had bad english, strange customs, possibly large families (though probably not; not catholics). Worked in textiles, farming, sales. My dad and aunts are lawyers. I'm a lawyer, my bro a mega quant at a credit card company, or consulting on that kind of work now. Another in jail occasionally.
I don't harbor problems with legal immies and I sympathize with wetbacks --but the
volume is so large, I do wonder about costs. And while Rand wanted open borders (complete meritocracy, completely free market for labor) I have some doubts.
Actually I like recent immies so long as they know the BoR.
What is the point of admitting vietnamese if they can't stomache dissent?
Am I becomming a crusty old fart? I don't think so. I hope not.
Washington DC is more a hazard than wannabe ag workers jumping the border.
Legalizing pharms would eliminate a huge amount of crime and smuggling.
Smuggling special nuclear materials, fer instance.
I also worry about Mexico exporting criminals, or them being attracted by
the US. That probably justifies a border role even in lib utopias.

Once again the "statistic" more than doubles the actual figures. According to a 2006 story in The Times, there were 41,240 Medi-Cal births to "undocumented women" in the county in 2004. They accounted for 27% of all births
This in an article intended to *minimize* the number of illegals' births. Yet its over a quarter!

Seems the mil doesn't like reality.
Lance Cpl. Joshua M. Bernard, sans legs, pending his bleedout in OR and consequent bloodclot.
Hint: make sure your tourniquet works.
Hint: beware of foreign entanglements.
AP photog actually getting a good picture: priceless
What Bernard's buddies lied to him: "you're doing fine, you're doing fine"
What Gates and his buddies lie about Afghanistan and other foreign wars: "you're doing fine, you're doing fine"

State seeks to revoke license of Anaheim day-care center after toddlers wound up on train tracks [Updated]
September 2, 2009 | 12:13 pm
State regulators want to revoke the child-care license of an Anaheim YMCA day-care center after two toddlers wandered off during an outing last month and were found on nearby railroad tracks.
In a complaint filed this week, the Department of Social Services said the YMCA Children’s Station violated health and safety laws by failing to adequately supervise and protect the 2-year-old boys, who were discovered missing during a routine head count. They were returned unharmed.
The state said the day-care center did not have enough adults supervising children

Predator is used in two ways in early 21st century pop media. The first is as a remotely operated plane --a killer robot, since they usually have a missile or two on them. This is their good meaning.
The other is sexual preditor, Megan's List (tm) enrollee. That is the bad meaning.
If you shift perspective a little, realize that 14 is fine for marrying (eg
Davy Crockett, and still the lower boundary in Kentucky) albeit riskier for breeding than say 18 for biological reasons; and that killer aerial robots might be considered at least dishonorable, at most satanic, by various opposers.
Jus sayin'.
BTW, you will not get breast cancer if you have over 8 kids. Its a medical
fact --you avoid the estrogen that promotes the cells.

This is on my way to work. Next to a go-cart place.
Oh yeah, I got a doctor's recommendation. The one I had from 1999
wasn't being accepted.
Under the airport's approach path. Obscure but worth it.
My BP in the MD's office was 160/100. WTF? AT home it was under 130/77.
My gout is flaring up on the other (right) toe. Looks worse than it feels.
Indomethicin helps, but this time its not gone quickly. Yet I'm fasting or
only eating carbs.
You know why Al Gore invented the internet?

In about 3 hours you can be qualified and supplied. The choices will amaze you
if you're a fogey like me. It could all be done in Irvine; my MD was just a mile north, because they could schedule me sooner. The MD was $150 (no cost if no recommendation) and the dispensopharmacies charge about a third more than a freelancer ---though given all the expenses of a regular biz, this is a great deal. (No overhead, adverts, state taxes, disability, SS, etc for the free lancers.)
Oh, and guess what? I pay taxes, stay out of trouble, drive conservatively,
have a brilliant son, and build useful medical instruments. What a concept.
I've donated money to: politican campaigns (Dr Paul), public television (after
seeing Animusic), my high school in name of my science teacher Dr Priest,
and once to a woman who was trying to find a dog that had been stolen during a
home robbery when I was picking up my second black cat. (The first I had raised
from kitten hood to 18+ years; the second, my current buddy,
was nomimally 5 years old.) Recently I leave penny change at the corner store where I have taken to buying beer after work; the fellow there once let me take a penny.
Its quite unnatural but I do feel the fuzzies from helping generic others.
No, I'm not autistic, as far as I can feel. :-)

"...died of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device" goes the
mil obit.
Why don't they just say "when he drove over a mine"?
No, its gotta be "enemy forces" "attacking". With some multisyllablic weaseling for a homemade mine.
I'm reading about the IRA. The "enemy forces" are "volunteers" aka freedom fighters (tm). The IRA needed to improvise more
than the folks the US is invading.
