"From today, WHO will refer to the new influenza virus as 'influenza A (H1N1) mexican'," it said in a brief announcement posted on its www.who.int/en/ website.
The new strain has infected 257 people, of whom 8 have died.
It derives from a swine influenza virus but the new strain has been found only in people. No pigs have been confirmed to be sick with it.
WHO has consistently said the disease cannot be caught from eating pork if it is prepared properly.
"There is also no risk of infection from this virus from consumption of well-cooked pork and pork products," it said on its website on Thursday.
The name of the flu led several countries to slap bans on imports of pork from Mexico and the United States, where the outbreak first appeared, and authorities in Egypt have ordered a cull of pigs.
U.S. and European food industries and governments had been calling for a change in name to remove the link in people's minds between the disease and pigs.
Maybe eating pork is protective as it has decoy sialic acid exposure..

The achievement gap between white and minority students has not narrowed in recent years, despite the focus of the No Child Left Behind law on improving the scores of blacks and Hispanics, according to results of a federal test considered to be the nation’s best measure of long-term trends in math and reading proficiency.
Isn't it obvious? A racial gap is real. Read The Bell Curve. Deal with reality.
The 2008 score gap between black and white 17-year-olds, 29 points in reading and 26 points in math, could be envisioned as the rough equivalent of between two and three school years’ worth of learning, said Peggy Carr, an associate commissioner for assessment at the Department of Education.

I've attended vivisections on pigs, to test medical instruments. More moral than simple eating, and damn does bacon taste good!

Since information obtained from a person in a psychotic drug state would be unrealistic, bizarre, and extremely difficult to assess, the self-administration of LSD-25, which is effective in minute dosages, might in special circumstances offer an operative temporary protection against interrogation. Conceivably, on the other hand, an adversary service could use such drugs to produce anxiety or terror in medically unsophisticated subjects unable to distinguish drug-induced psychosis from actual insanity. An enlightened operative could not be thus frightened, however, knowing that the effect of these hallucinogenic agents is transient in normal individuals

Hang Rep. Jane Harman and the AIPAC spies.
Harman was a proponent of various infringements on civil liberties, including the warrantless NSA wiretap program, the FISA Amendment Act of 2008, the PATRIOT Acts, and the Military Commissions Act. She actively supported congressional motions to effectively declare war on Iran, and she sponsored the truly horrific Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007, which fortunately never passed into law. Her bill, described by one critic as an "unconstitutional, Orwellian throwback," mandated the creation of a congressional commission empowered to hold hearings, conduct investigations, and propose new legislation to deal with the threat posed by the various groups designated as "homegrown terrorists." Like the House Un-American Activities Committee in the past, the Violent Radicalization bill would have empowered congressmen to travel around the United States to hold hearings and identify "homegrown terrorists."
And naturally Bush and his evil chihuahua were involved
Bush Attorney General Alberto Gonzales reportedly intervened to stop the ongoing FBI investigation of Harman because the administration needed her to intercede with the New York Times to suspend its story on the illegal NSA wiretaps. She did so, twice, though the Times denies that she was a decisive factor in delaying the story. If the report had come out on time, it might have influenced the outcome of the 2004 presidential elections, and John Kerry, a member of Harman’s own party, might have become president.
And this is how Israel runs other US politicians: blackmail from wiretaps, etc.
Imagine if Monica Lewinsky were an agent.
Once you are on the hook in an intelligence relationship, there is no getting off it. Had Harman done a favor for the Israelis and been rewarded in return, it would have been a skeleton in her closet forever. The Israelis might also have taped the incriminating conversations, presumably unaware that the FBI was also on the line. The Israelis would surely remind her of her crime whenever they need a favor, and she would be forced to pay the piper whenever called upon. What could have been better for Israel than owning the director of central intelligence or the head of the House Intelligence Committee?

Getprev Poland's Krystian Zimerman, widely regarded as one of the finest pianists in the world, created a furor Sunday night in his debut at Walt Disney Concert Hall when he announced this would be his last performance in America because of the nation's military policies overseas.
Before playing the final work on his recital, Karol Szymanowski’s "Variations on a Polish Folk Theme," Zimerman sat silently at the piano for a moment, almost began to play, but then turned to the audience. In a quiet but angry voice that did not project well, he indicated that he could no longer play in a country whose military wants to control the whole world.
“Get your hands off of my country,” he said. He also made reference to the U.S. military detention camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
About 30 or 40 people in the audience walked out, some shouting obscenities. “Yes,” he answered, “some people when they hear the word military start marching.”
Others remained but booed or yelled for him to shut up and play the piano. But many more cheered. Zimerman responded by saying that America has far finer things to export than the military, and he thanked those who support democracy.
For the first half of the recital, Zimerman had played a Bach Partita and Beethoven’s last piano sonata, Opus 111, with firm determination. After intermission he made a last minute substitution, exchanging late Brahms works for a 1953 sonata by Polish composer Grazyna Bacewicz. The Szymanowski variations, which closed the program, was played with an astonishing ferocity that brought nothing but tumultuous cheers. There was no encore.
The pianist was not available after the concert for further comment.
Zimerman has had problems in the United States in recent years. He travels with his own Steinway piano, which he has altered himself. But shortly after 9/11, the instrument was confiscated at JFK Airport when he landed in New York to give a recital at Carnegie Hall. Thinking the glue smelled funny, the TSA decided to take no chances and destroyed the instrument. Since then he has shipped his pianos in parts, which he reassembles by hand after he lands. He also drives the truck himself when he carries his instrument from city to city over land, as he did after playing a recital in Berkeley on Friday.

I recently resigned from my prior employer because they couldn't make payroll. They tripled floorspace, moved to more expensive real-estate (near the airport), doubled staff, and then could not get business or investment ---and had radically underbid
my project. Classic fail, any pair of reasons ---moving, tripling, doubling, underbidding, and timing--- could have toasted them. Instead, they got all of them.
But they can remain in debt longer than I can so I quit, er, recognized the layoff, looking for fulltime work. The legal stuff is likely tangled, my former employer being I hope the bad guy. But I like him and his crew; but my obligations to family are stronger.
Just took my car to the dealer for oil, coolant change, found out I needed brakes (10%, ok, I expected this) new CV boot (had no idea, but I saw it), and my engine bushings are going, which explains some vibration I'd been noticing while idling (only realized later). Oh, and one of the ball joints was different than another, with grease showing, and that needs fixing. So instead of a quick $100 job its a pickup tomorrow or tonight $600 job. Good thing I have 'subaru bucks' from my credit card ---I think I can cover it without actually paying cash I don't want to.
Besides, its a 2001 bought Sept 2000 and now its Apr 2009, albeit only 76K miles.
Its a good car, Subes still sell (unlike General FAIL Motors etc) and its been good to me. Went up Silverado canyon drive, to the truck trail, most of the way to the top, but then el kiddo got bored. Nice though. Saw a salamander in a pool under a dam made during the Conservation Corps days. In SoCal in April, a salamander!
A few days ago found a large lizard in the house, sans tail. The tail was probably
found a month ago thanks to el gato. So I got the lizard out of the house. Now we have like a dozen houseflies on the ceiling. Am considering getting hausgeckos from petsmart.

Rep. Jane Harman , the California Democrat with a longtime involvement in intelligence issues, was overheard on an NSA wiretap telling a suspected Israeli agent that she would lobby the Justice Department reduce espionage-related charges against two officials of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, the most powerful pro-Israel organization in Washington.
Harman was recorded saying she would "waddle into" the AIPAC case "if you think it'll make a difference," according to two former senior national security officials familiar with the NSA transcript.
(See related transcript of Jeff Stein online Q&A about his column.)
In exchange for Harman's help, the sources said, the suspected Israeli agent pledged to help lobby Nancy Pelosi , D-Calif., then-House minority leader, to appoint Harman chair of the Intelligence Committee after the 2006 elections, which the Democrats were heavily favored to win.
Seemingly wary of what she had just agreed to, according to an official who read the NSA transcript, Harman hung up after saying, "This conversation doesn't exist."

Besides mining magnetite for magnetic or thermite experiments, you can also make art. Instead of collecting the magnetite into a container, you "paint" with it on unsorted sand. You can achieve quite a high contrast and you are not leaving unnatural pigments around --just locally decreasing the entropy of (ie, sorting) the sand.

Obviously this Knowlton character runs a domestic madrassa, ie homeschool terror training grounds. They probably own a gun. More than one, even. And more than

Obviously Knowlton is making a thinly veiled (get it, pislam reference?) threat against the State.

El Toro’s Radium Contaminated Hangar ‘in Limbo’
Robert J. O'Dowd Salem-News.comHangar 296, constructed in 1944 is over 200,000 square feet in area. It is the second of two huge maintenance hangars in the highly industrialized section of El Toro.
The now-closed El Toro Marine Corps Air Station is seriously contaminated by TCE- trichloroethylene, but problems around Hangar 296 are radioactive, and research indicates that ra-226 contaminants will be around for a long time. Salem-News.com photo by Tim King |
(IRVINE, Calif.) - A huge maintenance hangar at former MCAS El Toro remains “radiological restricted” over California Department of Public Health concerns about a Navy radiological survey.
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has not approved an MCAS El Toro hangar contaminated with Radium-226, despite a July 2002 Navy report recommending unrestricted use.
The Navy recommended that Hangar 296 and 297 be “radiologically released” from unrestricted use in July 2002. The Radium 226 was found only in Hangar 296. CDPH did release Hangar 297 for unrestricted use, but not its twin, Hangar 296.
Both maintenance hangars have been identified as sources of the trichloroethylene (TCE) plume spreading into Orange County’s principal aquifer. Follow-up by the Salem-News.com with CDPH indicated that the state had concerns about the Navy’s radiological survey of the hangar. CDPH did not respond to requests for additional information on the specific concerns preventing unrestricted use.
Based on an agreement with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, CDPH “has been designated as the agency responsible for administering programs to protect the citizens of California from unnecessary exposure to radioactive materials. Although the NRC has responsibility for monitoring facilities under Federal jurisdiction, DHS becomes involved when a Federal facility, such as MCAS El Toro, is undergoing closure in a plan to revert to State control.”
Radium 226 (Ra-226) at high levels is a known human carcinogen. Navy monitoring wells on base reported elevated levels of alpha radiation from Ra-226 in groundwater confined to an area near several landfills, but there does not appear to be any risk of exposure to local residents. However, no efforts were made to contact Marine veterans who worked in the area and may have been exposed to radiation.
For some Marine veterans of El Toro, the news of Ra-226 contamination in this hangar must seem like a “double whammy.” Hangars 296 and 297 had been identified by EPA as primary sources of the trichloroethylene (TCE) plume, spreading into Orange County for over twenty years. No El Toro Marine veterans were ever notified by the Navy or Marine Corps of their possible exposure to TCE and its health effects and it appears unlikely that any veterans who worked in Hangar 296 will be informed of their possible exposure to Ra-226 and its health effects.
El Toro closed in July 1999 with much of the former base sold at a public auction in July 2005. Many El Toro veterans are now geographically dispersed throughout the country. Even if the Defense Department was required to notify these veterans, it would not be an easy task. For example, there is no database for the Navy or Marine Corps to readily identify El Toro veterans. EPA, responsible for oversight of Superfund sites like El Toro, has not even listed Ra-226 as a contaminant of concern so anyone accessing EPA’s El Toro Superfund site would be unaware of their possible exposure to Ra-226.
Hangar 296, constructed in 1944 is over 200,000 square feet in area. It is the second of two huge maintenance hangars in the highly industrialized section of El Toro. The hangar was the site of the base’s radium paint room, located in the lower north mezzanine of the building. According to the Navy, the radium paint room operated from the 1940s until the mid-1960s. Marines used radium luminescent paint on military aircraft’s instruments and gauges to allow pilots to fly at night without detection. The use of Ra-226 for this process was discontinued by the Navy and Marine Corps in the 1960s.
A radium paint room was a common feature on many military airfields. Discovered by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1893, radium salts were first mixed with zinc sulfide during WW I to make a luminous paint. The luminous paint was used on various military instruments and gauges. Alpha particles from the radium collided with zinc sulfide molecules emitting a light over the painted surface. It served as an effective means of illuminating watches and even gun sights to allow the user to view the item at night.
One major problem with Ra-226 is that it has a half-life of 1,600 years. According to McGraw-Hill’s Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, “half life is the average time interval required for one-half of any quantity of identical radioactive atoms to undergo radioactive decay.” When radium decays, it divides into two parts. Radiation is one part and the second part or daughter is like radium unstable and divides into radiation and another daughter until a stable, nonradioactive daughter is formed. During this lengthy decay process, alpha, beta, and gamma radiations are released. For example, if there were 2 grams of Ra-226 in the year 409, then 1 gram would still remain in 2009. It’s obvious that any Ra-226 contaminants will be around a long time.
Radiological Survey
Roy Weston, a Navy consultant, reported in July 2002 that engineering drawings and a base radiological assessment “showed the existence of a radium room and supporting rooms in the north mezzanine of Hangar 296. Records have been found to substantiate that refinishing of radio-luminescent dials was authorized from March 1949 to October 1950. In addition, other areas of Hangars 296 and 297 stored and used aircraft equipment containing radioactive strontium and krypton until closure in 1999.”
Based on a review of Weston’s report, the Navy contractor reported that “all areas [in the hangar] “were considered impacted and were surveyed. Impacted areas were further divided into one of three classifications:
Class 1 Areas: Areas that have, or had, a potential for radioactive contamination based on site history, or known contamination above established release limits.
Class 2 Areas: Areas that have, or had, a potential for radioactive contamination based on site history, but are not expected to exceed established release limits.
Class 3 Areas: Areas that are not expected to contain any residual radioactivity. These areas have a very low potential for residual radioactive contamination, but insufficient information exists to justify a non-impacted classification.
Roy Weston’s radiological survey results showed that most of the lower North mezzanine Hangar and a section of the upper North mezzanine (administrative work space) were classified as either Class 1 or Class 2 areas.
The Navy completed remediation activity in the hangar, including dismantling the entire portion of the ventilation system from the radium room and removing it from the area, resurfacing the hangar roof, removing plumbing system components, and removal of some floor tiles.
An unanswered question is what’s holding up the state’s approval of unrestricted use of this hangar?
