Besides mining magnetite for magnetic or thermite experiments, you can also make art. Instead of collecting the magnetite into a container, you "paint" with it on unsorted sand. You can achieve quite a high contrast and you are not leaving unnatural pigments around --just locally decreasing the entropy of (ie, sorting) the sand.
